About the D4 Bootcamp

The D4 bootcamp is designed for individuals who have been admitted to graduate programs at ISU and who are interested in building a career in data science, Artificial Intelligence, and machine learning. You will gain hands-on experience in solving real-world problems using examples from different domains. The bootcamp will be interactive with hands-on practical assignments and projects. The bootcamp will provide the necessary coding background for joining the graduate-level course covering topics in trustworthy data science. The first 5 weeks of the bootcamp will be online only, while the last week will be in person only. Each week will include about 35 hours of learning per week.

Dates of the D4 Bootcamp

Weeks of July 25th, 2024 - August 15th, 2024 (Bootcamp in 2025 will follow similar dates)

Fee

None, the bootcamp is provided free of charge. It is fully supported by the National Science Foundation Award No. 2152117.

Class Size

The class size is limited to 20 this year. Priority is given to the trainees admitted to the National Research Traineeship on “Dependable Data Driven Discovery” first, then ISU graduate students, and undergraduate students with two semesters remaining to graduation.

Certificate of Completion

Certificate of completion of the bootcamp will be granted for participants who pass 80% of the activities.

Instructor

Dr. Adisak Sukul, Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Iowa State University

Upon completion of the bootcamp, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the data science lifecycle and its key components.
  • Write programs in a high-level language to solve data science problems.
  • Perform descriptive data analysis and extract insights.
  • Apply fundamental machine learning concepts such as training, tuning, and testing sets, and feature extraction.
  • Use basic machine learning techniques to tackle data science challenges.
  • Evaluate performance of machine learning models and diagnose any issues.
  • Collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Clearly communicate data science results to stakeholders.
  • Identify and mitigate risks to the dependability of the data science process.
